   Part One of this book deals with Black's most popular choice, the Open Variation, involving the capture ... d5 x c4 at an early stage. Several of the most critical lines In the Catalan at present are the various gambit ideas contained in Chapters Three and Four.

   Part Two covers the Closed Variation, where Black builds a solid centre. A principle area of theoretical importance here is when Black limits White's options by playing an early ... Nb4.
