Research for this project started, and the initial list was drawn up, early in 1975. R.G.Wade is responsible for the writing of and opinions given in the biographical material. There are many quotations from Chess is My Life (Batsford), Seven Veils written in Russian by Vik Vasiliyev and translated for us by Dr. K.P.Neat, and from Korchnoi's article "A Year in the West" in Jan. 1978 Chess Life and Review. The chief sources researched were Sahovski Informator, Shakmatnaya Moskva, Shakmaty (Latvia) and USSR Central Chess Club Bulletin. Books and bulletins of tournaments and matches in which Korchnoi participated were scanned for information. Special acknowledgments are due to Lothar Schmid, Kurt Rattman, Harry Golombek, Jimmy Adams and Kevin O'Connell for help in obtaining material, to Korchnoi's 1977/8 second, Ray Keene, for helpful advice, to Hilary Thomas for considerable help in the editing, as well as his expert type-setting, to The Chess Player for preparing the diagrams, to Gary Clark for proof-reading, to Les Smart for assistance in annotating, to George Fifield for help in preparing the indexes and to Tony Hosking for typing cross-tables.
