Our choice of the Three and Four Knights Game is based on the long successful history of these closely related debuts. In each case, White can always have the "draw in hand" while waiting for Black to make that one, even very slight, error which will immediately give White the better of it. For those who feel the Three and Four Knights is too drawish, we must point out that my co-author, International Grandmaster Larry Evans, has discerned several important new ideas and researched long buried variations to add zip to White's first move birthright.

The beauty of the system we recommend is its strategical simplicity, with a number of tactical twists which can catch even strong players "sleeping". White's position is so reliable that it would take several small errors or one rather large mistake to jeopardize White's game.

Once you have studied and played this system for White, you can expand your repertoire to include other major e-pawn openings (such as the Ruy Lopez) as your knowledge and playing strength increase.

This book can be the beginning of a long successful career with the active e-pawn openings, one in which I predict you will win your just share of upsets over higher rated opponents, who will often underestimate your special preparation.
